Soft-Close Drawer Slides

MDI uses full-extension soft-close drawer hardware selected around the cabinet system, drawer construction, loading, and installation conditions—including concealed Blum TANDEM undermount runners and KV 8450FM side-mount slides.

The drawer slide controls access and daily feel

Why Better Drawer Hardware Matters

A drawer can have beautiful dovetail corners and still perform poorly if the runners are undersized, misaligned, difficult to adjust, or inappropriate for the drawer geometry. Slide selection determines how far the drawer opens, how smoothly it travels, how it closes, how it disconnects for service, and how the box fits inside the cabinet.

Soft close is only one part of performance. MDI also considers extension, rated load, drawer width, side clearance, mounting method, adjustability, cabinet construction, and the contents the drawer is expected to carry.

What MDI Reviews

  • Undermount or side-mount construction
  • Full-extension access to the drawer back
  • Load class and anticipated contents
  • Drawer width, length, side thickness, and bottom construction
  • Required side or underside clearance
  • Disconnect, locking, and adjustment method
  • Soft-close engagement and final alignment

Two real systems—two different mounting methods

Blum Undermount vs. KV Side-Mount Slides

Both can provide full extension and controlled closing, but they are not interchangeable. The cabinet opening and drawer box must be built around the chosen hardware.

Blum TANDEM With BLUMOTION

The runners sit beneath the drawer, keeping the metal hardware out of sight during normal use. Full extension provides access to the back of the drawer, while locking devices secure the box to the runners and allow convenient removal and adjustment.

  • Concealed beneath the drawer box
  • Full-extension configurations available
  • Adaptive BLUMOTION soft close
  • 100-pound load class in the referenced U.S. TANDEM program
  • Locking-device attachment and adjustment

KV 8450FM Force Management

This steel ball-bearing slide mounts between the drawer sides and cabinet. Its full-extension travel, soft-close module, lever disconnect, and standard side-clearance requirements make it useful for compatible new cabinetry and replacement conditions.

  • Side-mounted steel ball-bearing construction
  • Full extension with soft close
  • 100-pound load class
  • One-half-inch side clearance per side
  • Recommended for drawers up to 24 inches wide

Key Differences

Hardware visibilityBlum TANDEM is concealed beneath the drawer; KV 8450FM remains visible on the sides when open.
Drawer-box sizingUndermount runners require specific underside notches and box geometry; side mounts require lateral clearance.
Drawer removalTANDEM uses locking devices; KV uses a side-mounted lever disconnect.
Best fitThe correct system follows the collection, drawer construction, available clearance, load, and service needs.
Do not size the drawer first and choose slides afterward. Drawer width, bottom position, back preparation, side thickness, cabinet opening, and mounting locations must follow the selected runner specifications.

Three terms that are often confused

Full Extension, Soft Close & Load Class

01

Full Extension

The drawer travels far enough to expose the storage area near the back instead of leaving it trapped beneath the countertop or drawer above.

02

Soft Close

A damping mechanism controls the final closing movement. It reduces slamming but does not replace correct alignment, loading, or installation.

03

Load Class

The slide rating must be interpreted with the manufacturer's test conditions, drawer width, installation, cycle requirements, and intended use.

The runner and drawer box work as one assembly

Drawer Construction Still Matters

Soft-close slides cannot correct a weak or distorted drawer. Joinery, side thickness, bottom thickness, back preparation, squareness, front attachment, and the relationship between the box and cabinet opening all influence performance.

Wide utensil drawers, deep pot-and-pan drawers, waste pull-outs, pantry drawers, and vanity storage place different demands on the hardware. The box and runner should be selected together around the actual use.

Drawer-System Checklist

  • Drawer remains square and securely joined
  • Bottom thickness suits the span and expected contents
  • Runner length matches cabinet depth and box preparation
  • Side clearance or undermount geometry follows specifications
  • Drawer front attaches securely and adjusts correctly
  • Closed position remains aligned with neighboring fronts

Correct installation protects smooth operation

Clearance, Alignment & Final Adjustment

Slides must be parallel, level, secure, and mounted at matching elevations. The cabinet must be installed square enough for the drawer to travel without binding, and the front must align without forcing the runners to compensate for cabinet distortion.

Confirm the Opening

Measure cabinet width, depth, squareness, and any interference from hinges, plumbing, electrical components, or adjacent hardware.

Prepare the Drawer

Follow the runner's required drawer width, bottom location, back notch, bore, side clearance, and attachment details.

Install in Parallel

Mount both runners straight, level, and at matching positions so the drawer does not rack, drag, or release unevenly.

Load-Test Operation

Check full travel, closing engagement, reveal alignment, front security, and performance with realistic drawer contents.

Use the system that fits the cabinetry

Which Slide Should You Choose?

Blum TANDEM undermount hardware is the refined choice when concealed runners, compatible wood-drawer construction, and adjustment through locking devices suit the cabinet system. KV 8450FM side mounts are appropriate where visible side hardware is acceptable and the drawer opening provides the required half-inch clearance on each side.

MDI does not present one mounting style as universally superior. The right answer is the hardware that fits the cabinet collection, drawer geometry, loading, replacement conditions, and project priorities.

Soft-close drawer slide questions

Drawer Slide FAQs

What is the difference between undermount and side-mount drawer slides?

Undermount runners sit beneath the drawer and are normally concealed during use. Side-mount slides attach between the vertical drawer sides and cabinet, so their metal members remain visible when the drawer is open. Each requires different drawer sizing and preparation.

Does full extension mean the drawer comes completely out?

No. Full extension describes how far the drawer travels during normal operation so the storage area near the back is accessible. Drawer removal uses the system's locking devices or disconnect levers.

What are Blum TANDEM drawer slides?

Blum TANDEM is a concealed runner system for wood drawers. Full-extension versions with integrated BLUMOTION provide access to the drawer back and controlled closing, while locking devices connect the drawer to the runners and provide adjustment.

What is the KV 8450FM slide?

The KV 8450FM is a 100-pound-class, full-extension, side-mounted steel ball-bearing slide with soft-close Force Management technology, lever disconnect, and a one-half-inch side-clearance requirement per side.

Can side-mount slides be replaced with undermount slides?

Not as a direct swap in most cases. Undermount runners require different drawer-box width, bottom placement, back preparation, locking devices, and cabinet mounting conditions. The drawer and opening must be evaluated before changing systems.
