Send MDI your measurements, appliance information and project goals. Our design team can help you compare collections, review the layout and determine the right cabinetry path.

How to Choose the Right Cabinet Maker for Your Kitchen Renovation

Learn how to evaluate cabinet makers, construction quality, design drawings, pricing, installation responsibilities and project coordination before starting your kitchen renovation.

The right cabinet maker does more than supply attractive doors. A qualified cabinetry professional should understand layout, construction, appliance clearances, fillers, finished ends, hardware, installation requirements and how the cabinetry connects with the rest of the renovation. These decisions determine whether a kitchen merely photographs well or performs properly for decades.

Start by Defining What You Are Hiring

“Cabinet maker” is often used to describe several different roles. One company may design and build fully custom cabinetry. Another may design and supply manufactured cabinets. A separate installer may complete the field installation, while a licensed contractor coordinates structural, electrical, plumbing and permitted renovation work.

Do not assume one proposal includes every responsibility. Before comparing prices, identify who is designing, measuring, supplying, modifying, delivering, installing and coordinating the surrounding renovation.

A good cabinetry company clearly explains its scope and how the remaining work will be handled. MDI Luxury Cabinetry supplies cabinetry and professional design support. Installation may be completed by MDI Custom Homes as a licensed general contractor, by a qualified contractor selected by the customer or as an appropriate DIY installation.

What a Skilled Cabinet Professional Should Understand

Planning

Kitchen layout

The designer should understand workflow, storage, appliance placement, landing space and how doors and drawers function when several people use the kitchen.

Construction

Cabinet specifications

They should explain the cabinet box, shelves, drawer boxes, hinges, slides, door construction and finish rather than relying on vague descriptions such as “all wood.”

Coordination

Appliances and clearances

Appliance specifications must be reviewed before ordering. Refrigerators, ranges, hoods, dishwashers and built-in ovens have clearance and ventilation requirements that affect cabinetry.

Execution

Installation realities

A practical designer anticipates uneven walls, out-of-level floors, fillers, scribes, finished ends, moulding transitions and access for installation.

Communication

Drawings and approvals

You should receive understandable elevations or 3D views showing the proposed cabinet arrangement before the order is released.

Accountability

Written scope

Pricing should identify the cabinetry, accessories, delivery, installation and exclusions so that competing proposals can be compared fairly.

Review More Than Portfolio Photography

A beautiful photograph shows the finished style, but it may not reveal who designed, built or installed the cabinetry. It also cannot show whether drawers operate correctly, doors align, fillers fit or storage works.

When reviewing previous work, look for:

  • Consistent door and drawer alignment
  • Clean transitions at walls, ceilings and appliances
  • Properly finished cabinet ends
  • Accurate crown and moulding joints
  • Hardware placed consistently on operable doors and drawers
  • Functional corners and adequate door clearances
  • Projects comparable in complexity to your renovation

Reviews can also reveal how the company communicates, addresses problems and follows through after the sale. MDI maintains a page of verified directory and business listings to help customers confirm that they are dealing with the correct company.

Ask About the Actual Cabinet Construction

Cabinet quality cannot be evaluated from the door color alone. Ask what materials are used for the cabinet box, back, shelves, drawers and finished ends. Review shelf thickness, drawer-bottom construction, hinge adjustment and slide capacity.

Use our cabinet construction guide and cabinet quality comparison to understand the specifications that matter before comparing prices.

The least expensive proposal may exclude panels, fillers, mouldings, finished ends, organizers, delivery or installation. A lower total does not automatically represent a lower price for the same finished kitchen.

Require a Detailed Design Before Ordering

A cabinet order should not be based on a rough sketch and appliance widths alone. The design should show how the cabinetry interacts with walls, windows, plumbing, appliances and adjacent rooms.

A proper design review should address:

  • Overall cabinet dimensions and ceiling height
  • Appliance model numbers and installation requirements
  • Fillers, scribes and door-opening clearances
  • Finished sides, end panels and island backs
  • Crown, light rail and ceiling transitions
  • Drawer and pull-out locations
  • Sink, faucet and plumbing locations
  • Range-hood width, height and ventilation path
  • Countertop overhangs and seating clearances
  • Hardware style, size and placement

MDI uses 3D CAD cabinet design to help customers review the layout before cabinetry is ordered or constructed.

Compare Door Samples and Finishes in Person

Online photographs help establish direction, but they cannot accurately communicate door thickness, rail width, center-panel depth, wood grain or sheen. Full-size samples should be viewed vertically and under lighting similar to the finished room.

Compare the door with its matching drawer front and proposed hardware. A narrow Slim Shaker rail requires different hardware proportions than a traditional Shaker or raised-panel door.

Review our guides to cabinet-door styles and wood cabinet doors before finalizing the selection.

Understand Custom, RTA and Product-Line Differences

The correct cabinetry does not have to come from the same category for every project. Premium RTA cabinetry can work well when the layout fits established cabinet sizes and efficient delivery is important. Fully custom cabinetry is better suited to unusual dimensions, architectural transitions, specialty finishes and highly personalized storage.

MDI offers nationwide RTA cabinetry as well as two separate hand-built product lines:

  • MDI Custom Cabinetry: hand-built custom cabinetry comparable to respected local custom cabinet builders.
  • MDI Luxury Cabinetry: our top-tier line with the most exquisite finishes and features, 12¼-inch-deep upper cabinets and the trademarked MDI crown laser-engraved into its premium drawer boxes.

There is no product called “MDI Luxury Custom Cabinetry.” MDI Custom Cabinetry and MDI Luxury Cabinetry are two distinct lines.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Cabinet Maker

  1. Who is responsible for the final field measurements? The answer should be established before the cabinetry is released.
  2. Who designs the kitchen and reviews appliance specifications? Confirm whether drawings and revisions are included.
  3. Exactly what construction is included? Ask about boxes, shelves, drawer boxes, hinges, slides, doors and finishes.
  4. What is excluded from the price? Review delivery, installation, countertops, hardware, panels, trim and jobsite modifications.
  5. Who handles damaged or incorrect components? Understand the inspection, reporting and replacement process.
  6. Who coordinates the surrounding renovation? Cabinet supply does not automatically include plumbing, electrical, structural or permitted construction work.
  7. What must be approved before ordering? Final dimensions, door style, finish, hardware and drawings should be documented.
  8. What is the expected schedule? Separate design, production, delivery and installation time instead of relying on one vague completion date.

Cabinet-Maker Warning Signs

Be cautious when you encounter:
  • Pricing without drawings or a defined cabinet list
  • Unclear responsibility for field measurements
  • No review of appliance model numbers
  • Vague descriptions such as “solid wood throughout”
  • Pressure to approve an incomplete design
  • No explanation of fillers, panels, mouldings or installation
  • A portfolio that cannot be connected to the company’s actual work
  • Promises that ignore realistic production and construction schedules
  • No written process for damaged, missing or incorrect components

The Best Cabinet Maker Protects the Finished Design

A professional should be willing to explain when an idea creates an operational or construction problem. That may mean changing a door swing, adding a filler, relocating a drawer, adjusting an appliance or declining an attractive detail that cannot be built correctly.

Good cabinetry design is not about agreeing with every request. It is about understanding the homeowner’s goal and developing a buildable solution that protects function, appearance and long-term performance.

Cabinet-Maker Questions

Should the cabinet maker also install the cabinets?

Not necessarily. The important issue is that the installation scope, responsibility and coordination are clearly defined. Some cabinet companies install their products, while others supply cabinetry for installation by a qualified contractor.

Why are detailed cabinet drawings important?

Drawings allow the homeowner, designer and installer to review dimensions, appliance spacing, fillers, finished ends and cabinet operation before production begins.

Is custom cabinetry always the best choice?

No. Fully custom cabinetry is valuable when a project requires unusual sizes, specialty details or complete design freedom. Premium RTA cabinetry may provide better efficiency and value when standard cabinet sizes fit the layout.

How should cabinet proposals be compared?

Compare the cabinet list, construction, finishes, accessories, delivery, installation and exclusions. Comparing only the final price can produce a misleading result.

Can MDI help coordinate a complete kitchen renovation?

Yes. MDI Luxury Cabinetry provides cabinetry and design services, while renovation and installation work may be coordinated through MDI Custom Homes where appropriate.
